Quick answer
The best first-timer route from Dubai: Tokyo (3 days) → Hakone (1 day) → Kyoto (2 days) → Osaka (1 day), flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka. Budget for two, flights included: value ~AED 14,000, comfortable ~AED 22,000, luxury from AED 45,000. Every day below includes halal food and prayer logistics.
This is the exact skeleton I use when friends in Dubai say “one week, first time, don’t make us regret anything.” It’s deliberately not greedy — Japan rewards depth over checklists. Fly DXB→Tokyo (direct, ~9.5h overnight works beautifully), return Osaka→DXB so you never backtrack.
Before you go: sort your eVisa 3–4 weeks ahead, and check the season — UAE winter break and Eid line up wonderfully with Japan’s best months.
Day 1–3: Tokyo
Day 1 — Land, breathe, neon
Land at Haneda (prayer room after immigration), train to your hotel — stay in Shinjuku or Shibuya, within 5 minutes of a major station; this single choice saves hours all week. Evening: the neon canyons of Shinjuku, dinner at a halal-certified ramen shop nearby, then the free observation deck of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.
Halal & prayer today: halal ramen in Shinjuku; pray at your hotel — request a quiet meeting room if needed, hotels are used to it.
Day 2 — Old Tokyo: Asakusa & Ueno
Senso-ji temple before 9am (trust me), Nakamise street snacks, then Asakusa’s halal cluster for lunch — halal wagyu sukiyaki within walking distance of the temple. Afternoon in Ueno Park. Evening: Tokyo Skytree or a Sumida river cruise.
Halal & prayer today: Asakusa is Tokyo’s strongest halal neighbourhood; prayer space near the tourist information centre.
Day 3 — Shibuya, Harajuku & Tokyo Camii
Cross the Shibuya scramble, walk Cat Street to Harajuku. Visit Tokyo Camii — Japan’s largest mosque and one of its most beautiful buildings, with a Turkish halal restaurant attached. Sunset from Shibuya Sky (book 2–3 weeks ahead).

Day 4: Hakone — the highlight night
Take the train toward Mt Fuji country and check into a ryokan with a private onsen — a hot-spring bath on your own room’s balcony, mountains in view, total privacy. For most of our readers this is the night they talk about for years. The how, the why and which ryokan: see our private onsen guide.
Halal & prayer today: most ryokan will prepare seafood/vegetarian kaiseki if asked when booking (we phrase the request in Japanese when we book — it matters). Pray in-room.
Day 5–6: Kyoto
Day 5 — East Kyoto classics
Kiyomizu-dera at opening time, the lanes of Higashiyama, Gion in the late afternoon. Dinner: halal wagyu or Muslim-friendly kaiseki — Kyoto’s halal scene is smaller than Tokyo’s, so reserve before you fly.
Day 6 — Bamboo, gold, and the best afternoon in Japan
Arashiyama bamboo grove early, Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), then a tea ceremony or kimono walk. Kyoto Station’s prayer room is genuinely good.
Day 7: Osaka & departure
Morning: Osaka Castle or the Dotonbori food chaos (halal takoyaki exists — yes, really). Afternoon flight from KIX, or squeeze in last-minute shopping at Rinku outlet on the way.
Total budget breakdown (2 people, 7 days)

| Ryokan night (Day 4) | AED 900 | AED 1,800 | AED 4,000+ |
| Food & local transport | AED 2,800 | AED 4,400 | AED 9,000 |

Skip the JR Pass for this route — point-to-point shinkansen tickets are cheaper for one-way Tokyo→Osaka travel. (Full reasoning in our cost guide.)
How to customize this itinerary
- Family with kids: swap Day 3 afternoon for teamLab Planets, add a Disney day, slow everything down by 20%.
- Honeymoon: second ryokan night in Kyoto (Arashiyama), private tea ceremony, Shibuya Sky at sunset.
- Want snow: January–February version swaps Hakone for 2 nights in Nagano — snow monkeys and powder.
- Ramadan timing: entirely doable and quietly beautiful — see our Ramadan notes in the halal guide.
